Hitachi Adds New 750GB 2.5″ Drive to Lineup

More news in the laptop department, this time’s Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (GST) introduced a brand new 375GB per platter 2.5″ drive. They managed to squeeze 750GB into a single notebook drive. Both 5400rpm and 7200rpm flavors are present, and FYI this is industry record when talking about capacity.

The drives are a standard 9.5mm design, and there are two other capacities available: a 640GB and 500GB model. Both Travelstar 5K750 and 7K750 families are first Hitachi drives that feature Advanced Format, which increases physical sector size on hard drives from 512 bytes to 4096 (4K) bytes. The Travelstar 5K750 series were also designed with extremely low power consumption for energy efficiency, boasting 0.5 watts low power idle and 1.4 watts power during active read and write sequences, resulting in longer battery life in notebooks. While the 7K750 has a 16MB buffer, 3Gb/s SATA interface and the lowest read/write power spec in its class at 1.8W.

Hitachi’s Travelstar 5K750 is currently shipping in bulk, and the retail counterparts should hit shelves by next month with a MSRP of $129.99 (USD). However the 7,200 RPM drives, both OEM and retail kits, should be available in the first quarter of next year.
