Intel Laptop Chipsets to Sport USB 3.0 Soon

Well it’s better late than never, and rather than letting board makers come up with third-party solutions that meet this SuperSpeed spec, Intel has already begun working with its partners on their next-generation laptop platform – codenamed “Chief River”. Of course it’ll include native USB 3.0 support and these boards will be much cheaper to produce opposed to the current (e.g. NEC) ones. This is quite the relief, and good to see Intel having an open mind to finally support this new standard and kicking off development in general.

For those of you that are still in the wild about all this, USB 3.0 is fully backwards compatible with USB 2.0 (current). This would mean that your old devices and gadgets would still function properly on these new ports. However, in a nutshell, USB 3.0 caters much higher transfer speeds and has new power management features.
