Hard Drives to See Price Increase

You may have heard that motherboard prices are to increase around Q3 this year due to component shortages, and NAND flash memory saw a similar scenario as well. More recently, hard drive prices can go up over the course of 2011 – it’s due to a lack of controller chips for the motors used in the drives rather than any mechanisms or the platters within.

Channel pricing has already risen 10-15% lately, and there’s bound to be another jump by 5-10%. Many of the disruptions in supply were due to the natural disaster in Japan, as it damaged three wafer plants that Texas Instruments own and unfortunately shipments won’t resume until September.
